Notes for Ann Stubblefield
Ann Stubblefield was married four times. Lewis Scruggs, Titus Husted, John Holman, and Theosophilus Parker. Her Cherokee Roll Number is #30824. She is buried in the Northeast corner of Lot 26, West Hill Cemetary, Sherman Texas. This is from Pearl Montgomery, her great granddaughter, who helped prepare her body for burial Each time the Census taker came around she changed her age. By the time she married Parker (age 25, said 35), she also said she was only 35, when she was really 57. On later Inddian records she gave her correct age. In a book, "The Life of Belle Starr", there is reference to Confederate scouts needing information in Carthage. Lewis Scruggs, Jr., was one of these scouts. They "knocked at the back door of Mrs Huested to get information. She was a full-blooded Cherokee and could be trusted to tell them the truth. She was also the mother of Lewis Scruggs, Jr." Later applications for tribal benefits by some of her children also state she was Full-blooded Cherokee, and refer to other members of her family, brothers and sisters.
