He had to go to work at age 7, when his father died of axphyxiation in a rooming house in Oslo. He went through school in Norway, served a bit of time in the military, graduated from agricultural college, and emigrated to America in 1879. He became the County Engineer of Douglas County Washington, when Douglas and Grant Counties were one. He had eight children, seven of whom lived to old age. Married at age 45.
