Notes for John Frederick “Fred” Cordes
2nd husband of Maria Dreir - was about 12 years younger than Maria. Had worked in store for Maria. He fathered Anna and Frederick Cordes and ? Cordes, who died. Fred belonged to "Rodenburg Society"? Was from (ampt) Rodenburg, Germany. Mother was father's second wife. Came to America to avoid draft into Franco-Prussian War, then helped siblings come over.

Was respected, kind man who was tall and large. Had many friends who admired him. President of Confectioner Organization. Hunted game; shot in the leg which was amputated without anesthetic. Had wooden leg but still was physically active. Nice, steady personality.

He helped daughter Anna Cordes Zanker after Otto Zanker died. Helped with money when necessary. Gave them a turkey on Thanksgiving. He was boss of his family, though younger than wife. Was a happy marriage, said Juliette.

Fred had 5 sisters and 7 brothers. Family lived in upstate NY? Came before Civil War (conflict with “came to avoid Franco-Prussian draft)? when Fred very young? Were two of his brothers William Cordes and Jack (John?) Cordes. William married Margurite Rose? So was Juliette's cousin Margaret - who took care of Great Aunts Zanker - the daughter of William? She was the sister of Bill (William) Cordes who worked as Vice President at Cartier Jewelers in Manhatten. Bill's daughter is Lynn Cordes, a retired nurse who sends us Christmas cards. Who was Gus? Was he Margaret's husband? Was he killed in WWII? What happened to Jack Cordes? Was his grandson or great-grandson the Jack Cordes that was married to the French woman Marie? They had several children, divorced, she returned to France. John met them.
