Notes for Anna Cordes
After Otto's death, Anna wore black widow's weeds for 5 years. For the first year she went to his grave each week by carriage, draped in her veils with her children. (Think of the psychological warping that must have had on the kids!) Anna later developed a fondness for sherry, which she indulged in with a friend down the street who was a seamstress. Caused a problem for children. Julliette said she didn't want to bring home friends, for fear of how she would find her mother. Then one day she quit, perhaps because of a threat from her father Fred Cordes who was helping financially. According to Juliette, Anna was a worrier, was superstitious, and "sweet". She closed the piano when her husband died, never to play again.

Babe thought Anna could not control her contentious four daughters. Lived with son Otto later, who was more tractable it seems. She tended to hoard, perhaps because of financial insecurity. John said aunt Mildred was that way and also very tight, probably for same reasons. Mildred's financial state caused some bitterness in her, since all other sisters were financially very secure. Babe hoarded pathologically.

Born in Manhattan - married Otto Julius when she was 23; her brother Fred died (age 22) from tuberculosis, and her other sibling (name?) died as infant. Anna was generous, kind, played piano. Six children, didn't work outside home. Never remarried after widowed at 36.

Died at age 83 - diabetic, overweight.

Had 4 siblings?
